St John In The US Virgin Islands | Schools | History
St John is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands but is truly the loveliest of the three. There are plenty of white sandy beaches on St. John with its 7 miles long and just 3 miles wide. Maho, Cinnamon, Trunk Beach, Hawksnest, Perkin Bay, Windswept, and American Point are the major beaches. They are unspoiled by development and an entire two-thirds of the island is under protection by the United States National Park Service.
The Friends of Virgin Island National Parks hold a swimming relay called Beach to Beach Swimming Run held each year to benefit the island. They swim from Maho to Hawksnest, which is about 6 miles. Proceeds benefit the special projects of the non-profit organization's cultural, environmental and natural resource programs.
Gifft Hill School is a unique private school serving pre-school to 12th grade students. A whopping 98% of students are admitted into colleges around the nation. More than 50% of its students are sponsored by the school itself or outside sources. It depends in large part to the gracious giving from parents and the community of St. John Island. The school accepts volunteers and donations of school supplies, landscape, and furniture.
History of St John - The Arawak Indians were the first to land on St John in 300AD. But Columbus is given the credit for discovering the Island in 1493. But it was the Danes that settled the Island in 1672. The island only has two major resorts. St John's School of the Arts is supported in part by The Virgin Islands Council of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
