Water Island image1Thinking of getting away? I mean REALLY getting away? Then you must check out Water Island. The newest addition to the United States, the 491 acres is waiting for you to arrive.

Water Island is a mile wide and 2 miles long which makes it the smallest island of the popular U.S. Virgin Islands.  You can fly in to
St Thomas and then board the ferry in Crown Bay Marina at Charlotte Amalie Harbor for Water Island´s Phillips Bay Ferry Dock. The ride takes about 30 minutes and costs about $4.50 USD.

Water Island is mostly volcanic in nature but the beaches are the specialty. It is mostly residential with not much commerce on the island.

Honeymoon Bay is one of the most popular places to soak up the sun

There are less the five hundred residents on the island. It does have power  and phone service through underwater cables coming from St. Thomas.  Water Island Botanical Gardens was a hobby of Walter Phillips. Plants from all over the world have been brought in and established. It is a member of the International Association of Botanical Gardens and of the Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboretum.

There are plenty of opportunities to stay on the Island and there is a quaint little Cantina that opens on the weekends for lunch. On the North end is the quiet gated community of Sprat Bay Estates, which of course includes Sprat Bay. However, all the beaches on Water Island are public. Sprat Bay Estates covers 150 acres, two thirds of which is protected from development. Many of the homes or villas include beautiful waterfront views.

The United States added the island in 1996.  Some of the little known hot spots on Water Island are:

  • Carolina Point
  • Honeymoon Bay
  • Fort Segarro - A fascinating underground fort built just as World War II was ending to protect the submarines landing at St Thomas. You are welcome to explore but need to bring your own flashlight and sturdy shoes.
  • Limestone Bay
  • Sprat Bay - Home of the Sprat Bay Estates.

Smaller still are the beautiful view points such as

  • Elephant Bay
  • Flamingo Bay
  • Flamingo Point
  • Carol Point
  • Phillips Bay, which has a Ferry Dock, Post office and Pay Phone

Take the Ferry to Water Island image2History of Water Island  As far as we can tell the Taino Indians were the first to inhabit the island. They were fierce enemies of the Carib Tribes that surrounded Water Island. The Taino had on the island what others wanted fresh water ponds.

So popular was the island, years later pirates frequented the island as a quick stop for fresh water.

Again in the 18th and 19th century Water Island was owned by several free blacks and mulattos who farmed on cotton plantations and raised healthy livestock. In 1905 the land was sold to the Danes and for some reason was not a part of the 1917 sale to the United States.

Water Island was not a part of the original islands secured by the United States in 1917 and no one knows why.

The US did purchase the land at the end of World War II in hopes of building a submarine base and many outer buildings which were later turned into guest homes and even a hotel. The hotel was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo. Ownership of Water Island was transferred from the Federal Government to the Territorial Government in 1996. The US recently decided to develop the Island.
