History - Frederiksted was named for Frederick the V who purchased what was then the Danish West Indies in 1754. The locals call it Freedom City for the 1848 emancipation of slaves on the islands. Thirty years later the town was destroyed by fire but later restored during the Victorian age which is reflected in some of the beautiful historic architecture which is Frederiksted. In all, there have been seven different countries that have held the rains of St. Croix; Spain, England, Holland, France, Knights of Malta, Denmark and lastly the United States. Some of the structures you can visit are; Fort Frederik, St. Paul´s Anglican Church, St. Patrick´s Catholic Church, Apothecary, Customs House and many more. The best way to see Frederiksted in just one day is through a walking tour which starts at the Emancipation Park.
